We are experts in the field of ground grid impedance, step and touch potential, and general grounding system measurements. Our equipment is sophisticated and is suited to test any grounding system.
Most often grounding systems are improperly designed and installed without the appropriate tests to validate their purpose in protecting workers and the public. Since ground grids are very much static systems that lie beneath a medium such as concrete or crushed stone, we often forget the critical role they play in protecting workers during system events and ensuring equipment attached to the system works properly.
Simple stated: If you periodically test personal protective grounds (PPG) to certify its current carrying capability, then why not test the grids that allow PPG’s to work?
OrionMagnetic’s personnel that perform our field testing services are engineers that also have extensive experience designing ground systems. This experience provides us the unique skills to appropriately assess grounding systems, to choose the appropriate test protocol, and avoid pitfalls that often other testing firms do not know exist.
Our testing services can include software modeling of the system tested. Corrective designs, if warranted, can be provided by the same team performing the test. We provide non-stop shopping to our clients.

Accurate soil resistivity measurements form the basis of grounding system design. To ensure accurate data, we use geological exploration equipment that also performs the protocols for measurement of electrical resistivity, such as Wenner 4-Pin, Schlumberger and General. We are also equipped to perform measurements in remote locations with ATV’s .
Our field staff are also engineers with extensive experience in the design of grounding systems. This expertise affords us the ability to make decisions in the field in order to avoid interference with buried and above-ground objects that can skew measurement data.
OrionMagnetics also interprets the measured data before rendering it to our clients. We use software modeling to validate and interpret data so our clients can perform their tasks without doubt.
Measurements and Interpretation Through Software Modeling
Most often the zero sequence (Z0) component and K-Factor of any line (overhead and underground transmission or distribution) is not computed or modeled properly. Please be aware that it is not the fault of the person performing this task, it’s just the information and tools required to model Z0 accurately are not readily available. There are many variables that determine Z0 and thus K-Factor, such as the earth return current via multiple soil resistivity layers; fault current returns via overhead shield wires, continuous counterpoise, distribution neutrals, gas pipelines; etc. It’s nearly impossible for the engineer to consider every factor when determining Z0 and K when he/she has many other tasks at hand. As a result of the multitude of factors involved, the most efficient and accurate means to avoid over and under-reach trips of a distance relay scheme is to test the line with instrumentation capable of injecting high currents of non-power system frequency and determine the complex impedances. OrionMagnetics performs this service globally. Our focus is to record accurate and realistic data to enhance the end-product of our clients.
Accurately measure and certify Positive (Z1) and Zero Sequence (Z0) Impedances of overhead lines and underground cables Lines of all system voltages can be measured Avoid over and under-reaching of distance relay schemes Sophisticated instrumentation used to certify actual sequence impedances
OrionMagnetics performs field measurements of power-frequency electric and magnetic fields. No matter the environment type or application, we can perform measurements and create professional reports to suit our clients’ needs.
